This conference offers targeted information for engineers conceptualizing, designing, and manufacturing next-generation medical devices. Conference attendees will come away with solutions to problems they face in their jobs every day, along with inspiration to spur future innovations. MD&M offers seven tracks covering all aspects of medical device design and manufacturing:

Keeping current with medical regulatory and quality requirements is an essential foundation to all device design and manufacturing. This track keeps you up to date with existing, new, and upcoming FDA and EU medical standards and quality best practices, and analyzes the impact those will have to your design and manufacturing processes.

Medical devices need to meet standards and regulatory requirements, security needs, and UI/UX best practices in a package that uses preferred and sustainable materials and manufacturing methods. The challenge is to research and develop creative designs that are comfortable and practical to use, and economical to manufacture. This track will look at ways to meet the latest medical device design challenges while also speeding the design and implementation process.

Medical devices must function extremely accurately, be usable in many situations by a wide variety of people, and make use of the latest data management tools. Strict guidelines for patient information security must also be met. This track will cover best practices for the growing uses of artificial intelligence (AI), user interface and user experience design, and planning for the requirements of safety, cybersecurity, and data regulations.

Medical electronics enable such devices as pacemakers, defibrillators, drug-releasing pumps, hearing aids, and diagnostic equipment. These products depend upon highly reliable electronic assemblies that must meet demanding medical industry standards. This track will focus on the range of electrical, electromechanical, and software systems used to make these advanced medical devices.

This track, organized by SPE’s Medical Plastics Division, brings together world-class academic and industry experts to discuss trends in medical polymers. New polymeric materials, processing, designs, regulations, and sustainability trends will be reviewed, with a focus on Midwest industry and academics. Attendees will have the opportunity to come up to speed with these topics and network with the medical polymer community.

3D printing and additive manufacturing have proven to be a valuable tool for both clinical and research-based healthcare activities and are rapidly expanding into production applications. From speeding medical device R&D to enabling point-of-care manufacturing, the applications of 3DP and AM are growing rapidly. This track will explore the many applications for 3DP and AM and how they can improve your workflow now.

Challenge drives innovation, bringing about novel new ways of accelerating medical manufacturing for a wide variety of products. This track focuses on the latest advancements in medical device manufacturing and how those can best be implemented in future product development.
